The venture has been started at the thriving River of Life Church at its Christian Life Centre in the south of the resort.
It follows a two-year project to refurbish the foyer of the centre in Carr Road to transform it into a comfortable, modern space for people to meet, relax and enjoy refreshments.
Graham Newman, Mayor of Felixstowe, joined the celebrations at the official opening of the new Community Café – and had the honour of cutting the ribbon.
Senior Pastor Rev Trevor Harris welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress saying: “It is a great joy to have our Mayor with us at River of Life Church for opening of the Community Café. Although absent, Pete Howe, the man whose desire and vision brought the Community Café into being, has expressed his appreciation.”
Mr Howe said: “I am sorry I could not attend this special day. This [venture] has been in the planning for two years, starting with the transformation of the foyer into a superb café.
“Special thanks to the Mayor and the councillors who funded part of this project. Thanks also to Genesis Housing, who have worked with us. For me, the greatest achievement is that the café has been able to help volunteers from Genesis serve in the café.
“A big thank you to John and Donna from Genesis, who have been outstanding in their commitment to the café. Donna has recently been given employment in a local hotel. Her experience gained in the café proved invaluable.
“A big thank you, too, to my sister, Jennifer, who manages the café, to Alan Boldison, and to all our own church volunteers who serve us so well, giving their time and making people feel so welcome.”
The Christian Life Centre was originally a metre manufacturing factory, but the church has transformed the premises into a contemporary worship space with large auditorium, offices, teaching rooms, kitchen and other areas.
The foyer was originally the reception to the factory but has been stripped out to create a fresh, welcoming space for the cafe and the entrance for visitors.
