A Felixstowe church is preparing for a three-month closure for a major building project.

Worshippers at St Mary’s Church, Walton High Road, have been planning and fundraising for the past few years for the work – and now have enough money to start the first phase of the scheme in January.

The On the Level project will make the church building fully accessible for all, and includes new floors from the main entrance and raising the floor level in the rear memorial extension. Two new toilets, one of which will be accessible, will be built. The entrance will be improved with the removal of the two sets of inner doors and new glass self-closing doors installed.

The 550-year-old font will be moved to the side aisle to make the space at the back of the church more open for hospitality.

Fundraising continues with a further £40,000 needed to install a new kitchen servery at the back of the church and extra storage cupboards.

The works are due to be completed by mid April for the first phase.

Worship will continue in the hall across the road. The church office will remain open as usual and in the the usual place in church.
