A music teacher from Felixstowe who has been rated as ‘outstanding’ is launching a new music class for young children, and is encouraging parents to swap screen time for singing.

Clare Seymour is launching her Musicbuds music classes in Felixstowe this month, and is hoping people will consider spending creative, interactive time with their young ones, rather than on TV and online platforms.

It follows a recent report from Ofcom suggesting that children are giving up on hobbies such as sports and music because they prefer to watch YouTube clips of celebrities performing those activities instead.

Clare, a Guildhall graduate, is a musician, psychologist and teacher and has been head of department in a number of schools, being recognised as ‘outstanding,’ and training a number of award winning choirs across the UK and Europe. She has spent years studying the positive effects of music for brain development and cognition, and provides musical learning resources to parents and schools through her company, Musicbuds.

Now, she is bringing her expertise to fun group sessions, offering classes for children ages two-and-a-half to five with their caregivers. The classes will involve a complete sensory experience – moving and responding to music in a number of ways that are enjoyable to both children and caregivers alike.

Clare said: “My passion is music, and I love helping children discover the wonder of singing and creating music in lots of different ways.

“There has been a wealth of research into the positive effects that music can have on a child’s development – something I strongly believe – and my classes provide a mix of fun and creativity for children, whilst also being a wonderful way to spend quality time together.

“I hear so often that people don’t know how to get their young children away from the Ipad or Youtube. I hope that by coming along to one of my classes, they’ll see how easy it is to make their own creative, musical fun, that can lead to a real love of music for years to come.”

The Musicbuds classes will be held at the United Reformed Church Hall in Tomline Road, Felixstowe, from Monday, February 25 from 9.20am until 10am, then every Monday during term-time. A free taster session will be held on February 25, then classes cost just £30 for five weeks.
