Suffolk Coastal’s plans to build a café at the entrance to Martello Park at the end of Sea Road has received overwhelming support so far.
Members of the Enjoy Felixstowe More Facebook group are fully in favour of the project ... and are keeping fingers crossed it comes to fruition without any problems.
Charlotte Bethel posted: “Great idea, and good location; it will encourage people to use the full beach.”
Dee Garwood simply said: “Love love it.”
Daniel Johnson said: “Give them a warm welcome to your community! Looks decent and modern.”
Claire Hempstead said: “Fabulous! Let’s hope it goes ahead.”
Bee Wiles said: “Great looking development for a hitherto rather dull area. Somewhere to walk or cycle down to for an evening drink. Great vision.”
Meanwhile, Maggie Crane said the computer-generated images were “modern but not too OTT” and Antony Perkins described it as “great brilliant design”.
While discussing the importance of the resort, Neil Thomas brought out a good point about needing more quality places for people to stay.
While a Premier Inn has opened and there are still hopes that a budget hotel could be built near the port one day, the resort has lost many B&Bs and hotels in recent years.
Mr Thomas said: “Felixstowe is doing some great things and it could be so much more! Investing in the the visitor facilities is great but please look towards quality accommodation being available (it currently isn’t).
“A start was made with the new Premier Inn – others need to be attracted to the town so it becomes again a family holiday location bringing money to the town.
“The modern family does not want to stay in ‘tired’ hotels and B&Bs with no modern facilities (ie air con in the rooms). I understand its a bit chicken and egg that you need the finance to progress but equally unless you upgrade you won’t attract. Would be interested in the council’s thoughts/plans.”
The new beach café proposal was drawn up after an engagement event was held by Suffolk Coastal District Council, through Felixstowe Forward, in July to seek the views of local people about plans for Felixstowe’s future.
